I’ve always said that if my family went off grid we would still do modern fun things like theme parks, etc. Maybe we would have more time and money to do those things. We are looking for land in several places but haven’t agreed on anything yet.

I do wonder about your future - what or how will you retire? Have you planned for future income when you are less able to work? I couldn’t do what you guys have done, but I do live what I call low grid: a simple paid for house and very low utilities etc. best wishes

Been there done that, have the t-shirt. Living off grid is more a frame of mind than anything else. We did it. My nephew and his wife did it, then came to the city wanting everything. Now they are doing it again. This time forever I believe. Sold their house and bought 10 acres in the boonies, paid for the land and camper, and starting the house. Gets in your blood after a while. There are so many gadgets and items now days it makes sense to do it off grid. Minnesota is not where I'd do it, but to each their own. First #2 things that you cannot do without are a Wood burning cookstove and a propane range with oven. After that comes the propane instant hot water heater and wall unit propane heater. So, you have all bases covered as far as cooking and heat, and showers and bath's. We had a cistern and septic tank put in as well later on, both worth their money times 10x. Toilets do not need electricity just water. And when the wifey is happy, you'll be happy. During the winters we used kerosene lanterns for light and heat. You'll be amazed how much heat they throw, as well as light. Another thing that really saved us was making shutters and a mud room on the front and back doors. Difference between night and day as far as heat loss. And retaining heat. We also invested in #2 trail cameras with phone service. We had both camouflaged one by the gate in and out. And the other watching the entire house from a tree 12 feet up. We could monitor them day or night and they would alert us at any trip. Well worth the money as well. And an outside dog. After 5 years we sold it making more money than we ever could of ever imagined. It was listed as possible sale and never was even listed really. They made us an offer we could not refuse. And just like that it was done. I liked subbed and notified. Building an off-grid house or cabin things have to be done completely different than regular stick frame homes. Just little things make huge differences. By the time I see someone's channel it's too late they have already built them. Advice ask away I'm sure I can help. Peace.

How do you keep mice out of your cabin/house? We have a log cabin in Northern Minnesota as well and mice are a continuing battle. They get into your clothes drawer, unsecured food, and generally create havoc. I totally agree that they are worse than bears.

The only difference between you and someone living rural with solar energy, house paid off, etc. is that they have plumbing and you don't. Where do you get gas from for your snow blower? You still got to pay property tax as well. You're not living off grid if you have the internet! Living off grid means you can't be tracked! CLICKBAIT!!!!!
